Why Functional Specification Studio (FSS)?

FSS is a cloud-native SaaS application that helps process engineers create, maintain, and update functional specifications using structured, vendor-neutral, and standards-based workflows. It bridges process and automation disciplines, visualizes sequences directly on P&IDs, streamlines change management, and ensures consistent, high-quality specifications across the engineering lifecycle. By enabling early alignment, standardized engineering practices, and better visibility into design intent, FSS helps teams avoid failures upfront rather than detect and rectify them later. This proactive approach reduces rework, minimizes project risk, and improves overall engineering efficiency.

Reduce Late-Stage Engineering Risks

FSS minimizes costly late-phase corrections by standardizing specifications, validating completeness, and enabling early cross-discipline alignment through visual P&ID-based workflows.

Accelerate Specification Creation

Automate data extraction, reuse type libraries, and collaborate in real time to reduce engineering effort and shorten specification cycles across units, equipment modules, and control modules.

Improve Specification Quality & Consistency

Ensure compliance with ISA‑88, ISA‑106, MTP, DEXPI, and AAS by using structured templates, consistent terminology, automated checks, and reusable type-instance models.

Enable Cross‑Discipline Collaboration

Cloud-native multi-user collaboration, shared review workflows, and real-time visibility ensure better alignment between process, automation, and operations teams.

Featured capabilities

Standards‑based functional specification creation

Create structured, vendor‑neutral functional specifications following ISA‑88, ISA‑106, MTP and AAS principles. FSS guides process engineers through defining states, commands, parameters, interlocks, and operational sequences at Plant, Unit, EM, and CM levels, ensuring complete, compliant and consistent specifications across the engineering lifecycle.

P&ID‑based visualization & sequence creation

Import P&IDs via DEXPI to automatically extract equipment, instrumentation, and connections. Define and validate operational sequences directly on the P&ID using visual highlights and step‑through animations, enabling clear communication between process and automation engineering teams and preventing misunderstandings early in the design phase.

Reusable type & variant libraries

Build standardized libraries of Equipment Modules (EMs), Process Equipment Assemblies (PEAs), and Control Modules. FSS automatically identifies patterns in imported P&IDs and suggests matching types. Changes to a type propagate to all instances, ensuring consistency and reducing engineering time across similar equipment. Supports variant management and reuse across projects.

Automated change & impact analysis

FSS detects P&ID revisions, highlights modified components, and automatically identifies affected equipment modules, sequences, control loops, and specification objects. Engineers can review, update, and approve changes with full traceability and version control, reducing risk of overlooked dependencies and avoiding costly late‑stage corrections.
