Customer success story

Brazil operates cranes remotely with Siemens technology

The world's first reference in remote operation of industrial cranes.

Suzano and DP World lead global pulp production and export.

Brazil is the world's second-largest producer and largest exporter of pulp, with Suzano being one of the main contributors to this achievement.

Location: Brazil
Products: SIMOCRANE RCOS technology
Partners: Suzano and DP World

Customer objectives

Suzano and DP World designed a port facility with cutting-edge technologies to increase productivity and boost pulp exports. This facility, completed in 2020, is located at the Port of Santos, in the São Paulo state, the largest and most important port in Latin America.

RCOS (Remote Control Operation System) technology is a global reference for industrial cranes and was designed to improve productivity, availability, safety and efficiency levels in cargo handling.

Innovating operations with Suzano and Siemens: automated and digitalized solutions for cranes

Suzano and Siemens formed a partnership for facility infrastructure design and the supply of automation and digitalization solutions for semi-automatic industrial overhead cranes. The entire process of Siemens solutions and equipment was implemented by Brazilian professionals at Suzano's terminal.

The remote-control operation system is controlled by stations installed outside the cargo handling area and meets all safety requirements. All incorporated technology contributes to making this project the world's first reference in industrial remote control.

Keys to success

Advantages of SIMOCRANE RCOS technology

The remote-control operation system technology is controlled by stations installed outside the cargo handling area and meets all safety requirements.

All equipment includes cutting-edge technological solutions, including SIMOCRANE packaging systems, meeting all client requirements, such as:

  • Machine monitoring
  • Digitalization
  • Reliability
  • Custom configurations

The crane equipment features supervision and diagnostic systems interconnected through a secure network. Thus, the system can process all automation functionalities and image processing for remote control.

Results

Suzano and Siemens: a successful partnership

Suzano made a significant investment to improve the entire port facility infrastructure. One year after operations began, Suzano had already exported an impressive 2.3 million tons of pulp, averaging 6,500 tons per day.

The company is a global reference in sustainable development and exports its pulp to more than a hundred countries worldwide.

Investment in RCOS technologies positions Suzano at the forefront of Brazilian industrial innovation. After all, combining safety, productivity and corporate governance is one of the company's main motivations.

The implemented remote operation system allows for modeling future projects, being suitable for implementation in factories and logistics centers as well.

Thus, the successful implementation of the remote-control system generated a major impact on terminal operations and a significant commercial impact on Brazil's pulp industry.
